Edgewood cancels trip to Islamic Center

TRENTON - A seventh-grade Edgewood Middle School field trip to the Greater Cincinnati Islamic Center in West Chester Township was cancelled last week after a group of parents raised concerns about the separation of church and state.

Leaders at the Islamic Center said it is unusual for a group to cancel.

"It rarely, rarely, rarely happens,'' said Shakila Ahmad, a volunteer who coordinates tours. "I empathize with the school, with the teacher, with the superintendent. They're working with some misinformed members of the community."

About 140 students had been scheduled for a 90-minute tour of the center. School officials said the trip would be rescheduled later this year and parents would be invited to attend.

Petting zoo part of Maineville carnival

MAINEVILLE - A petting zoo with snakes and birds is one of the highlights of the Hamilton-Maineville Elementary School carnival 2-6 p.m. Saturday at the school, 373 W. Foster-Maineville Road.

There will also be moonwalks, face painting, games, food, raffles for theme baskets and a silent auction featuring 90 items including sports and dinner tickets.

Also Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., Morrow Elementary, 10 Miranda St., will host its annual Winter Carnival.

The state-chartered Christian school offers instruction in grades K-8. Students of all faiths are welcome.
