Miami shocks first-place Kent

Enquirer news services

KENT, Ohio - Danny Horace rebounded a missed shot and scored as time expired Wednesday night, lifting Miami to a 59-57 victory over Kent State in a Mid-American Conference game.

"We were just trying to keep the ball alive, and Danny was able to muscle that final bucket in," Miami coach Charlie Coles said.

Horace's basket capped a huge Miami rally after the RedHawks had fallen behind by 17 points in the second half.

Miami trailed 45-28 but closed the game with a 23-6 run.

"This is a great team effort. We really needed this game, and the kids worked really hard to pull this one out," Coles said. "Juby (Johnson) had a great effort for us tonight. He really played like a senior."

Johnson scored a career-high 31 points, 26 in the second half. Chet Mason had 11 rebounds.

Miami (15-10, 11-6 MAC) can clinch the No. 3 seed in the MAC Tournament - and a first-round bye - with a victory over Marshall (11-15, 8-9) Saturday.

Kent State, in first place in the MAC East, fell to 20-6, 13-4.
