18-hour relay at XU benefits cancer fund

XAVIER - Xavier University will take part in the 2004 American Cancer Society Relay For Life April 2-3.

It begins 6 p.m. April 2 on the residential mall in front of the Gallagher Student Center and will last 18 hours. Team members will take turns walking around a "track" on campus to symbolize that cancer never sleeps.

The Relay For Life raises money to support research and education, advocacy and patient support programs. The year's goal is $40,000.

Teams of eight to 10 people are encouraged to participate. There is a $10 per person registration fee. A team's goal is to raise $1,000 per team to participate, organizers said.

Amadou's mother to speak on campus

UC - Kadiatou Diallo, the mother of an unarmed man killed by New York City police officers five years ago, will present "The Legacy of Amadou Diallo" at 7:30 p.m. Thursdayat the University of Cincinnati. The lecture, in Room 127 of McMicken Hall, is free.

Diallo's presentation will detail her frustration with the American justice system and her perspective of racial profiling and police brutality.

Cincinnati State to hold open house

CINCINNATI STATE - The Workforce Development Center at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will hold an open house March 17 on the school's Evendale campus, 10100 Reading Road, for local businesses and other organizations that want training for their employees.

The event will introduce the center's new executive dean, Sherry Kelley Marshall, former director of the Workforce Solutions Group at the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.

Participants have a choice of an early morning or late afternoon program.At the morning program, Marshall will speak and introduce program managers and staff at 8 a.m. A tour of the Evendale classrooms and program labs will follow.

Melvin Gravely, author and chief executive officer of the Institute for Entrepreneurial Thinking, will speak at 8:50 a.m. on "Improving Employee Skills."

The afternoon session will begin at 3 p.m. After registration and remarks by Marshall, there will a presentation at 4 p.m. on "State Support for Workforce Training" byChris Smith, the governor's regional economic development representative, and Brenda Latanza, regional training coordinator for the Ohio Investment in Training Program.

HUC celebrates founders' day

HUC - Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion invites the community to pay tribute to its founders, Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise on March 14.

A service will be at 11 a.m. in the S.H. and Helen R. Scheuer Chapel on the Clifton campus.

HUC President David Ellenson will award honorary degrees to 12 distinguished alumni for 25 years of service as preservers and teachers of Judaism, its faith, culture and ethics.
