Submarine group brings in expert
NEWPORT - A group with plans to bring a decommissioned submarine to Newport have brought in an expert on the USS Narwhal - its former commander, retired Navy Vice Admiral Michael C. Colley. Colley, the commander of the USS Narwhal from 1975 to 1977, was elected to serve on the board of trustees of the National Submarine Science Center, a Newport-based nonprofit group. Colley served 34 years in the Navy on nuclear-powered submarines. During the Gulf War, Colley was commander of the submarine force in the Pacific fleet. The group plans to convert the Narwhal into a math and science museum with a curriculum for fifth-graders featuring the history of the submarine.
Ohio man faces child porn charges
LEXINGTON - An Ohio man is facing federal charges after detectives say he left behind a computer disc filled with child pornography at a hotel in central Kentucky.
Christopher J. Hickey, 44, of Perry, Ohio, appeared before a federal magistrate in Columbus, Ohio, for a hearing Thursday morning. He is charged with the transportation and possession of child pornography.
Federal prosecutors say Hickey borrowed a CD-ROM that allowed him to access the wireless Internet system of a Winchester, Ky., hotel where he stayed on Feb. 18. When Hickey checked out of the hotel, prosecutors say he returned the wrong CD-ROM. The disc he returned was filled was thousands of images of child pornography, according to court records.
Spitting on teacher brings jail time, fine
BURLINGTON - A Florence mother was sentenced to seven days in jail and $500 in fines Thursday for spitting on an elementary school teacher.
Leona Blevins, 49, of Florence was convicted by a jury of two counts of abuse of a teacher and one count of disorderly conduct.
Maj. Joe Humbert of the Boone County Sheriff's School Resource Office said Blevins spit on Ockerman Elementary teacher Yolanda Wysocki on Oct. 29. He said Wysocki had tried to help a family resource coordinator who had been in an argument with Blevins.
The jury heard witnesses say Blevins grabbed Wysocki by the hair and shirt collar before spitting in her face.
Man gets 10 years in fatal crash
NEWPORT - A Williamstown man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday for causing a fatal wreck while driving drunk.
Ronald Horn, 43, had previously pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree manslaughter.
Horn will be eligible for parole in two years.
Prosecutors said Horn was speeding south on U.S. 27 about midnight on Sept. 30 when he crashed into a guardrail. His passenger, Ronald Asher, 50, also of Williamstown, died in the wreck.
Suspects sought in man's stabbing
COVINGTON - Police are looking for the person who stabbed a 21-year-old Taylor Mill man early Tuesday near the Cambridge Square Apartments in the Latonia neighborhood.
Detectives say Bruce Thomas was walking along Promontory Drive when a group of men wearing hooded sweatshirts emerged from nearby trees and assaulted him.
Thomas was treated for a 3-inch stab wound to his leg, according to police.
Liles named head of Drug Strike Force
COVINGTON - A retired Covington police lieutenant has been tapped to lead the Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force.
Lt. Jim Liles, who retired as assistant police chief last year, was chosen Wednesday evening from more than 45 applicants.
The task force's former director, Jim Paine, left in January to return to his native Utah.
