Miami tops OSU in OT, gets within point of first

Chris Michael's power-play goal at 3:07 of overtime lifted the No. 9 Miami RedHawks past No. 11 Ohio State 4-3 Friday at Goggin Arena. Miami clinched second place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

With one game remaining, the RedHawks drew within a point of first-place Michigan (38-37) after the No. 6 Wolverines tied Michigan State 4-4 later Friday.

The RedHawks (20-11-14, 17-7-3 CCHA) and Buckeyes (20-15-4, 15-12-0) close the regular season at 8:05 p.m. today at Value City Arena.

Michigan and third-place Michigan State finish the regular season tonight at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena.

Miami captured the Ohio Cup, a traveling trophy of competition among OSU, MU and Bowling Green.

AHL DUCKS FALL: Zdenek Blatney had a goal and an assist as the Chicago Wolves defeated the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks 4-1 at Cincinnati Gardens. Chris Kunitz scored for Cincinnati, winless in its last six (0-5-1-0).

ECHL 'CLONES LOSE: Cincinnati lost for a sixth consecutive game at U.S. Bank Arena, falling 3-1 to the Trenton Titans. Mike Henderson scored for Cincinnati.

FRIDAY IN THE NHL: Claude Lapointe and Mark Recchi scored 30 seconds apart in the first period, helping the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3.

• Wings 3, Canucks 1: Nicklas Lidstrom had a goal and two assists, and Manny Legace made 23 saves to lift Detroit. Brendan Shanahan and Brett Hull scored the other goals for Detroit.

• Hurricanes 3, Thrashers 2, OT: Miami University graduate Kevyn Adams scored with less than a second left in overtime.

• Rangers 3, Capitals 2: Jason LaBarbera made 19 saves for his first win and assisted on Bobby Holik's game-winner.

• Stars 5, Flames 1: Marty Turco made 22 saves, stopped a penalty shot and set the team record for minutes played, as Dallas extended its home unbeaten streak to a franchise record-tying 13 games.

• Lightning 3, Devils, 2 OT: Dave Andreychuk scored with 2:43 left in overtime, and the Lightning set a franchise record with their seventh straight victory.

• Ducks 5, Blackhawks 2: Steve Rucchin had two goals and an assist.

Horse racing

SANTA ANITA 'CAP: Pleasantly Perfect, the 6-5 morning line favorite, won't run in today's $1 million race because of a fever. Trainer Richard Mandella still has a horse in the 1 1/4-mile race, 6-1 third choice Olmodavor. The field, with jockey and weight:

DEVERS WIN AWAY: Gail Devers, 37, won the 60-meter sprint at the indoor world championships in Budapest, Hungary, moving within a victory in the hurdles of completing a historic double. Devers won the 60 dash in a season-best 7.08 seconds.

Tennis

QATAR OPEN: Justine Henin-Hardenne lost in the semifinals for her first defeat of 2004, beaten by Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Kuznetsova, ranked 20th, plays third-seeded Anastasia Myskina for the title in an all-Russian final. Myskina defeated Jennifer Capriati 6-2, 6-2.

RODDICK WINS: Unseeded Victor Hanescu upset second-seeded Martin Verkerk, and top-seeded Andy Roddick defeated nemesis Jan-Michael Gambill to advance to the semifinals of the Franklin Templeton Classic.

U.S. WOMEN WIN: Julie Foudy scored in the 87th minute to give the United States a 3-2 comeback victory over Mexico in the championship of an Olympic qualifying tournament.
