Shire Pharmaceuticals Group Plc, the British drug maker that is closing its Newport marketing offices, Thursday reported a 17 percent gain in fourth-quarter profit.
Net income for the three months ended Dec. 31 rose to $82.9 million, or 16 cents a share, from $70.9 million, or 13 cents a share, in the prior year. Revenues, fueled by increased sales of its Adderall XR hyperactivity drug, rose to $344.2 million from $302.5 million a year ago.
The company said Thursday that it was closing the Newport office, employing 170, and two smaller research operations in Rockville, Md., to create a consolidated U.S. headquarters in the Philadelphia area. The company said it expects to incur $55 million in costs to consolidate its U.S. operations.
For the full year, Shire said net income rose 10 percent to $276 million, or 54 cents a share, from $250.6 million, or 49 cents a share, in the prior year.
