By Rebecca Goodman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MOUNT LOOKOUT - John L. Dashiells Jr., a retired Procter & Gamble computer systems manager and substitute teacher, died Tuesday at Mercy Anderson Hospital of a heart attack. The Mount Lookout resident was 61.

A native of Baltimore, he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Johns Hopkins University, where he was a varsity lacrosse goalkeeper and a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Mr. Dashiells was an Army ROTC graduate and learned computer science while serving as a lieutenant in the Pentagon for two years during the Vietnam War.

In 1969 he moved to Cincinnati to work for P&G as a computer analyst.

Mr. Dashiells was always involved in the lives of his three children, volunteering at their schools - Mercy Montessori, North Avondale Montessori and Walnut Hills High School.

He was also an Explorer Scout leader and taught Sunday school at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church.

After he retired six years ago, he was able to spend even more time with his family. He also became a substitute teacher for the Indian Hill school district.

Mr. Dashiells was a member of the Crater Club - a group of about 42 families who summer in Essex, N.Y. - for the past 25 years.

"We had a wonderful life in Cincinnati and Essex," said Robin, his wife of 35 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Brooke Schmidt of Geneva, Ill., and Sarah E. Dashiells of Baltimore; a son, David R. Dashiells of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a sister, Nancy R. Dashiells of Groton, Mass.

The funeral is 11 a.m. today at Christ Church Cathedral, 318 E. Fourth Street, downtown. Interment will be at the cathedral's columbarium.

Memorials: The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, Attn: Patricia Callahan, 1 Charles Center, 100 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
