NCAA puck: Miami, OSU vs. Denver, Wisconsin

The Enquirer and wire reports

Miami and conference playoff champion Ohio State were two of a record five Central Collegiate Hockey Association schools selected Sunday for the NCAA Division I Tournament. Regular-season champion Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame (its first) are the other CCHA schools earning bids.

The CCHA sent four teams to the NCAA Tournament in both 1999 and 1996, when Michigan won the national title at the Frozen Four in Riverfront Coliseum (now U.S. Bank Arena).

The MU RedHawks (23-13-4), appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997 and third time overall, will play Denver (23-12-5) of the WCHA at 11 p.m. Friday in the West Regional at Colorado Springs. Miami is 0-2 in the NCAA.

It's student vs. mentor: Miami coach Enrico Blasi played for Denver coach George Gwozdecky at Miami and was an assistant under Gwozdecky at DU before taking over at Miami.

The OSU Buckeyes (26-15-0), in the tournament for the fourth time in six years, will face Wisconsin (21-12-8) of the WCHA at the East Regional in Albany, N.Y., at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

AHL DUCKS TIE UTAH: Mattias Tjarnqvist and Nick Naumenko each had a goal and an assist to help Utah tie the Mighty Ducks 2-2 at Cincinnati Gardens.

CYCLONES SNAP SKID: Cincinnati snapped a four-game skid with a 5-4 shootout win over the Storm in Toledo in an ECHL game. The Cyclones blew a two-goal lead in the third period before coming back to tie in the final minute with Phil Lewandowski's short-handed tally.

SUNDAY IN THE NHL: Michael Peca and Adrian Aucoin scored in the third period and Rick DiPietro made 28 saves in the Islanders' 3-0 victory over Tampa Bay.

• 'Hawks 2, Coyotes 2: Mike Comrie's power-play goal allowed Phoenix to rally from a two-goal deficit.
