Zito down but hardly out of Derby picture

The Enquirer and wire reports

Even in defeat, trainer Nick Zito is far from discouraged about his chances of winning the Kentucky Derby in six weeks.

Birdstone was Zito's latest loser, finishing fifth as the odds-on favorite in the Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park on Saturday.

"He's much better than that," Zito said after his star 3-year-old never got going over a wet track that was sealed to keep moisture from making the surface muddier. "We'll see what happens. We'll just regroup."

Zito's two other Derby prospects were beaten a week earlier at Gulfstream Park. Even-money favorite Eurosilver finished a head behind Wynn Dot Comma in the Swale Stakes, and The Cliff's Edge was a fast-closing third behind Friends Lake and Value Plus in the $1 million Florida Derby.

Since no other 3-year-old has produced a defining race, this week's Associated Press Top 10 Derby Prospects list again has been reshuffled, with Eurosilver moving back on top.

Although the colt was beaten at seven furlongs in the Swale, Eurosilver has shown he can cover more than a mile. Eurosilver won the 1 1/16th-mile Lane's End Futurity at Keeneland last year, and the Derby is 1 1/4 miles. The colt's final Derby prep is set for the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 10.

Birdstone is headed to the Wood Memorial. The Cliff's Edge is being pointed to the Arkansas Derby.

Both races are April 10.

NHL

SUSPENSIONS: New York Rangers captain Mark Messier was suspended for two games by the NHL for spearing Penguins defenseman Martin Strbak. ... Toronto's Wade Belak eight games for his two-handed chop to the face of Colorado defenseman Ossi Vaananen.

MOORE UPDATE: Colorado forward Steve Moore is walking without help and expects to be released from a hospital by today, just two weeks after his neck was broken by Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi.

Moore suffered no paralysis and there is no evidence of spinal cord trauma, Avalanche physician Andrew Parker said. However, two vertebrae were fractured and nerves in the neck area were stretched by the blow.

"His overall recovery and progress is uncertain, including his ability to return to professional hockey," a statement said.

• Coyotes 3, Wild 2, OT: Mike Comrie snapped the Coyotes' 15-game winless streak when he put back his own rebound with 24.2 seconds to play in overtime.

Boxing

MOSLEY FIRES DAD: Shane Mosley is looking for a new trainer after firing his father. Mosley and his father are severing their professional association that began when Jack Mosley first took his son to a gym to learn to box as an 8-year-old.

The decision comes in the wake of Mosley's March 13 loss to Winky Wright that cost him his 154-pound titles. Mosley was dehydrated for the fight.

HARDING THREAT: Tonya Harding canceled a scheduled fight in Oakland because of a death threat.

Auto racing

IRL HALL OF FAME: Former Indianapolis 500 winners Emerson Fittipaldi, Tom Sneva and the late Mark Donohue will be inducted at the Indianapolis Speedway in May.

Olympics

SWIMMING: The International Swimming Federation criticized Olympic organizers Monday for calling off plans to construct a roof over the main pool, calling the decision a "total surprise."

FINA said an open-air facility would expose athletes and spectators to scorching summer heat and compromise the quality of television coverage during the Aug. 13-29 Games.
