Here comes the bride's jewelry

Local designer creates unique pieces to help celebrate special occasion

By Joy Kraft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Laura Piker of Hyde Park has created a line of one-of-a-kind necklaces, earrings, bracelets and other wedding day specialties for brides and attendants being sold at One In a Million in Terrace Park. Her creations, made from natural and semi-precious stones, crystals and metals, include white freshwater coin pearls, soft pink natural pearls and faceted semi-translucent opalite. She'll also design pieces to complement gowns.

Donna Griffin, owner of One In a Million has these tips on selecting jewelry for brides:

• Your jewelry should complement, not clash the style, neckline and fabric of the dress. For example, a simple unadorned column dress provides the perfect opportunity to add a dramatic necklace while a very ornate dress or heavily-decorated neckline might only need drop earrings.

• Try color accents that reflect your personality and individuality.

• Tweak the traditional. A single strand of white pearls is classic. But there are options - silver, crystals, opalite and natural freshwater pearls in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors can add a modern, unique touch.

• Accentuate the positive. A long, graceful neck looks fabulous with dangly chandelier earrings. On the other hand, a short neck will appear shorter in a choker necklace. Try on lots of styles to find the one that suits the bride best.

One In a Million is at 222 Wooster Pike. Information: 248-9080.

Mattress/furniture call-up: Save the price of delivery on new furniture, up to $90, from Lazarus-Macy's when you schedule St. Vincent dePaul to pick up gently used mattresses and furniture. Friday to Sunday, Lazarus customers can schedule a pick-up with volunteers at the Lazarus-Macy's Kenwood Furniture Gallery at Sycamore Plaza. Details at 562-8841, Ext. 10.

Miss Martha trunk show: Designer dresses from Montage and Daymor with informal modeling, refreshments and accessories tips will be in the spotlight Thursday through Saturday at Miss Martha's Dress Shop in Fort Mitchell. The Montage and Daymor line is a favorite of mothers-of-the-bride and special occasion needs. Information: (859) 331-7878. Owners Sissy Kamer and Donna Tenfelde have these tips for mothers-of-the-bride choosing a dress:

• Shop five to six months before the wedding to allow enough time for special ordering and alterations.

• Be open to several styles and colors, leaving strict pre-conceived notions at home.

• Some dresses lack "hanger appeal" but look great on. Try several styles before making a final decision.

• Trust your instincts. Do get the opinion of others but you should make the final decision. When you look in the mirror, there will be one final outfit that is "just right."

• Coordinate with wedding party. Today, most brides ask moms to simply select something they like, including color. However, it's still tradition that the bride's mother makes her selection first.

For brides: Bridal designs by Romona Keveza and Erin Cole will be shown Friday through Sunday at Bridal and Formal, 300 W. Benson St. in Reading. Information: 821-6622.

At Parisian: Got a special occasion circled on the calendar? A prom or wedding? There will be a trunk show with informal modeling and refreshments with designs from Jovani and Adriana Papell 1-4 p.m. Saturday in the Parisian Room at Parisian, Kenwood Towne Centre. Information: 792-2400.

Jewelry trunk show: One-of-a-kind handmade jewelry from Tamra Gill Jewelry Designs, including crochet bracelets, rings, belts and necklaces made with sterling silver wire and embellished with gemstones are part of the spring line being shown 2-6 p.m. Friday, 2-6 p.m. Saturday and noon-3 p.m. Sunday at M. Willis Interiors and the Annie Bolling Gallery in Oakley. 3235 Madison Road. Information: 871-2100.

Target targets Duff: TV shows, dolls and record albums aren't enough for teen sensation Hilary Duff. She is the latest star to partner with Target. "Stuff by Hilary Duff" includes clothes, cosmetics, hair care, watches, accessories and bedding and will be available this spring at the trendy discount chain.

To be included in Style Extra, send information about a salon, beauty, fashion or personal grooming even at least two weeks before the date to Joy Kraft; fax: 768-8330; e-mail: jkraft@enquirer.com.
