Arthur M. Clayton developed houses

He also ran Queen City Carpet

By Rebecca Goodman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

KENWOOD - Arthur M. Clayton, owner of Queen City Carpet Co. and a developer in Amberley Village, died March 11 at Jewish Hospital after falling earlier in the day. The Kenwood resident was 87.

"He will always be remembered as a true gentleman with a warm smile, caring heart and sharp mind," said his grandson, David Besso of Northside. "He made a point to surround himself with loving family and friends, and made sure they were well cared for."

Mr. Clayton was passionate about traveling. "He's been around the world a couple of times," said his son-in-law, Bruce Besso of Blue Ash. "That's what he loved to do."

Mr. Clayton's father, Isadore, a Russian immigrant, founded Queen City Carpet on Vine Street in 1908.

Born in Cincinnati in 1916, Mr. Clayton attended the University of Cincinnati. He worked with his father in the store, eventually taking it over. He closed it in 1972. He and his father also bought and developed real estate in Amberley through their company, Crestdale Enterprises.

Mr. Clayton was a member of Adath Israel Synagogue and one of the first members of Crest Hills Country Club. He loved to golf.

His wife, Shirley S. Clayton, died in 1987.

In addition to his grandson and son-in-law, survivors include two daughters, Marcia Besso of Blue Ash and Marilyn Clayton of Merritt Island, Fla.; a close friend, Faye Provisor of Silverton; and two granddaughters.

The funeral has been held. Burial was at Adath Israel Cemetery in Price Hill.

Memorials: Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242.
