Tristate business summary



Roto-Rooter may resume old name

Cincinnati's Roto-Rooter Inc., which changed its name from Chemed Corp. last year, may be Chemed Corp. again soon. The company, which acquired hospice provider Vitas HealthCare Corp. last month, will ask shareholders to reverse the name to Chemed at the annual meeting May 17. In the shareholder proxy statement, the company said it expected a year ago to focus on its drain cleaning and plumbing operations and didn't foresee diversifying the business so soon.

Save-A-Lot coming to Mount Healthy

Save-A-Lot - a division of Supervalu that emphasizes price and a limited assortment of everyday items - will open its first store in Greater Cincinnati Wednesday in the Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center in Mount Healthy. St. Louis-based Save-A-Lot operates more than 1,000 stores in 37 states and generates annual revenue of more than $4 billion.

Towboat operator to shut down

The Ohio River Co., an 80-year-old operator of towboats operating on the river and its tributaries, will go out of business on or before May 19, the Cincinnati-based company has told state and city officials. The company has 135 employees and all but six work on towboats. Four of the remaining six work in the company's office here. Ohio River has been operated since 2002 by Tennessee-based Ingram Industries Inc.

AK Steel plant wins safety award

AK Steel said Thursday that its Middletown coke plant has again been selected to receive the Max Eward Safety Award from the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute. Employees at the Middletown coke plant have worked for four years in a row with a no lost-time injuries. This marks the sixth time in the past seven years the plant has won the award.
