FOREST PARK - Twenty-three teaching jobs in the Winton Woods City Schools will be eliminated next year as a result of this month's levy loss.
The jobs were among $2.1 million in budget cuts approved by the school board this week. Meanwhile, the 4,100-student school district will try again on the August ballot to obtain voter approval of a tax increase.
The 23 jobs represent 8 percent of the district's 313 teaching positions. They include one position from the department of curriculum, instruction and assessment; two from each elementary school for a total of 10; four from the middle school; and eight from the high school.
Eighteen other jobs were eliminated as well, including two administrative positions from the department of pupil services and department of curriculum, instruction and assessment; two office assistants; two custodians; and 12 instructional assistants. That brings the total of positions cut to 41.
Some of the 41 positions could come from retirements and resignations, said Board President John Pennycuff.
Technology, curriculum and communications budgets also were reduced by $60,000, and $40,000 was cut from summer school that is not mandated by law. Capital improvements were cut by $50,000, meaning new roofs, painting and sidewalk repairs are put on hold.
Various fee increases and cuts in services also are being considered.
The school board has not decided the levy amount that will be on the August ballot, Pennycuff said. The district's March 2 levy, if it passed, would have cost $274annually on a $100,000 house.
Superintendent Camille Nasbe said some of the cuts could be restored if the tax increase passes in August.
