Duke-UConn highlights Final Four weekend
The Associated Press
To a lot of people, Duke-Connecticut sounds like a championship game. The last time they met in the NCAA Tournament, it was.
Coaches Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Calhoun match up again Saturday night, highlighting Final Four weekend at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
"I'm tired right now, but it's a nice tired," Krzyzewski said after Sunday's 66-63 win over Xavier in the Atlanta Regional.
"I love my team. This has been one of my favorite teams. I don't think we're a great team, but I think we're real good."
Beaten by Richard Hamilton, Khalid El-Amin and the Huskies 77-74 in the 1999 title game, Duke will try to even the score. But before the Blue Devils (31-5) and Connecticut (31-6) play, they might want to call coach Paul Hewitt for a scouting report.
Hewitt guided Georgia Tech to wins over both teams this season. He kept up the Yellow Jackets' run this month, becoming the most surprising school to make it this far.
Georgia Tech (27-9) plays Oklahoma State (31-3) in the opener. The Yellow Jackets earned their first Final Four trip since 1990 by defeating Kansas 79-71 in overtime Sunday.
The Blue Devils and Connecticut both feature an impressive blend of talent and are led by a stellar big man.
Chris Duhon, the only prominent holdover from Duke's last national championship team in 2001, is an outstanding complement to Redick in the backcourt, providing his aching ribs don't slow him.
Connecticut counts on All-America center Emeka Okafor. A hard foul left him with a sore elbow in Saturday's 87-71 win over Alabama, and he played just 19 minutes and scored only two points.
"Just a little tingle. Nothing too serious," Okafor said after the game.
