Spanish teen stuns Federer in 3rd round

The Enquirer and wire reports

As the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 17, closed in on an upset of top-ranked Roger Federer, he flexed his biceps following one point and jumped behind the baseline after another Sunday in Key Biscayne, Fla..

When Nadal put away a volley to complete the biggest victory of his young life, he danced and punched the air. With a brilliant variety of shotmaking, the big-swinging left-hander from Mallorca beat Federer 6-3, 6-3 in the third round of the Nasdaq-100 Open.

Former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt lost to Andrei Pavel 6-4, 7-5. Hewitt had 10 double-faults, including three in the final game. Todd Martin advanced, but fellow American Robby Ginepri was eliminated by Nicolas Kiefer 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4.

In women's play, Serena Williams cleared another hurdle in her comeback from an eight-month layoff, surviving some shaky moments to beat Elena Likhovtseva 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the third round. Three-time champion Venus Williams struggled early but played a flawless tiebreaker and beat Daniela Hantuchova 7-6 (0), 6-2.

All five Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams (Michigan, Miami, Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame) were ousted.
