By Rebecca Goodman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

DELHI TOWNSHIP - Dick W. Richter, retired president of Richter Transfer, died Wednesday in a car accident on Interstate 75 north of Gainesville, Fla. The Delhi Township resident was 69.

Mr. Richter joined his father, August Richter, in the hauling and excavating business after studying at Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati and serving a stint in the Army.

They excavated the foundations of several buildings on the UC campus and did other big jobs around the city. Mr. Richter eventually became president of the company. After he sold it in 1987, he continued to work for it for a couple more years.

"He couldn't handle retirement, so he started working for Klug (bus company) and drove a charter bus to keep himself busy," said his son Brian of Tampa, Fla.

Mr. Richter was a 1953 graduate of Elder High School. After graduation, he attended XU for one year before enlisting in the Army. After his honorable discharge, he attended UC for another year before going to work with his dad.

He was a member of Western Hills Country Club for more than 30 years and served on its board.

He was also a member of the Ohio Operating Engineers, the Kiwanis Club and the Price Hill Lions Club.

Mr. Richter served for 12 years as treasurer of the church group that oversaw Schott Field, where St. Antoninus athletics are played.

He was preceded in death by his son Todd in 1971.

In addition to his son Brian, survivors include his wife, Marta Ann Moeschl Richter; his mother, Norma Richter of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Julie Maas of Hartland, Wis.; another son, Brad of Green Township; two sisters, Jane Purcell of Marco Island, Fla., and Gail Favree of Michigan; three brothers, John of Lawrenceburg, Ed of Texas and Bob of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at Radel Funeral Home, 650 Neeb Road in Delhi Township. Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesdayat St. Antoninus Church in Green Township.

Memorials: St. Antoninus Endowment Fund, 1500 Linneman Road, Cincinnati, OH 45238 or Elder High School, 3900 Vincent Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45205.
