Man charged with shooting 7-year-old

By Jane Prendergast
The Cincinnati Enquirer

OVER-THE-RHINE - The 7-year-old girl shot with a bullet meant for someone else Sunday lost parts of two fingers and was left with a broken collarbone, a broken rib and a bruised lung.

As Eninja Mincy continued to recover Tuesday at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, two new witnesses came forward and gave police the information they needed to charge a man with the shooting of the second-grader.

"We needed somebody to actually say: 'I saw the gun in his hand,'" said Capt. James Whalen, District 1 commander. "We needed someone to say: 'I saw him fire the shot that hit the little girl.'"

They got that Tuesday an` officers charged Donald Stevenson, 21, of Bond Hill. Stevenson had been jailed on charges that he broke into a neighbor's house after Sunday's shooting.

Police charged him with felonious assault in Eninja's shooting. He faces a second felonious assault charge related to the man police said he intended to shoot, David Johnston, 39.

Witnesses said the two men argued near the intersection of Walnut Street and East McMicken about 6 p.m. Sunday. Johnston taunted Stevenson, who went inside and came back out with a gun, police said. Eninja was playing with her cousins outside her aunt's East McMicken apartment when she was shot.

Police found the .38-caliber revolver they believe Stevenson used. They found the gun wrapped in a towel in a closet of the apartment Stevenson broke into after the shooting, Whalen said.
