Area players in Final 4 festivities

Cincinnati's Field Williams and Tony Bobbitt, Kentucky's Gerald Fitch and Erik Daniels (Princeton High), Xavier's Romain Sato and Dayton's Keith Waleskowski will travel to San Antonio this week to compete in two different all-star events in conjunction with the men's Final Four.

Williams, Sato and Fitch will participate in the ESPN 3-Point Shooting Championships, in conjunction with the Slam-Dunk Competition, at the University of Texas-San Antonio (9 p.m., Thursday, ESPN). UC coach Bob Huggins will be a slam-dunk judge.

Bobbitt, Daniels and Waleskowski have been selected to play in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' All-Star game against the Harlem Globetrotters at 8 p.m. Friday at the SBC Center. Fitch is first alternate.

Yeah, but what's Jessica thinking?

Nick Lachey, formerly of Cincinnati and formerly of 98 Degrees, was on ESPN2's Cold Pizza Tuesday as part of panel discussing long-suffering sports cities. Cincinnati was on list. Lachey opined that Ken Griffey Jr. "may need a change of scenery."

"See, even Nick wants to trade me," Griffey said. Lachey co-stars with wife Jessica Simpson on Newlyweds, an MTV reality show. He is scheduled to sing the national anthem on Opening Day.

Great American veggie friendly

PETA's annual survey of the top 10 vegetarian-friendly major-league baseball stadiums included Great American Ball Park. Its winning meatless crowd-pleasers include delicious veggie dogs, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and fresh salads.

Overflow crowd expected for Adu

D.C. United could be turning away fans from 14-year-old prodigy Freddy Adu's first MLS game Saturday - even though thousands of seats will be empty. United closed off the upper deck of 53,000-seat RFK Stadium this season and will adhere to a downsized capacity of 24,607.

Perrault, AHL Ducks rally to beat Rampage 3-2

SAN ANTONIO - Joel Perrault scored the winning goal midway through the third period, as the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks came back to defeat the San Antonio Rampage 3-2 Tuesday.

Chris Armstrong and Tony Martensson each had a goal an assist for the Ducks, who moved four points ahead of Utah for the fifth and final playoff spot in the AHL West Division.

NOTE: Team captain Casey Hankinson has been named the Mighty Ducks winner of the AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Cincinnati community and charitable organizations.

TUESDAY IN THE NHL: Sergei Samsonov scored the go-ahead goal, and the Boston Bruins moved into sole possession of first place in the Northeast Division with a 3-2 win over Carolina. Joe Thornton and Martin Lapointe also had goals.

• Devils 5, Rangers 0: Scott Gomez and Eric Rasmussen had two goals apiece, Martin Brodeur got his 75th shutout, and New Jersey tied Philadelphia for the Atlantic Division lead.

• Blues 1, Oilers 0: Doug Weight scored his first goal in 18 games, and Chris Osgood got his 41st career shutout to brighten the playoff hopes of St. Louis.

• Predators 5, Blackhawks 2: Vladimir Orszagh, Martin Erat and David Legwand had a goal and an assist each. Nashville kept alive its bid for the franchise's first playoff berth.

• Caps 4, Pens 2: Trent Whitfield had two goals and an assist to help goalie Matt Yeats earn his first NHL win.

Tennis

NASDAQ-100 OPEN: Andre Agassi's reign on Key Biscayne ended Tuesday when he lost to Agustin Calleri 6-2, 7-6 (2) in the fourth round of the Nasdaq-100 Open.

Agassi had won three consecutive titles and 19 straight matches in the tournament. He was bidding for his seventh title in the event and his 800th career match victory.

Second-seeded Andy Roddick reached the quarterfinals for just the second time, eliminating unseeded Guillermo Canas 6-3, 6-3. Rafael Nadal, 17, lost to No. 21-seeded Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-2.

In women's play, Serena Williams won the first 10 games and beat Jill Craybas 6-0, 6-1 in 55 minutes.

High schools

COMMITMENTS: Eric Hutson, an offensive lineman at Batavia, has committed to play at Wittenberg University. Hutson was a Division IV second team all-district player last season. La  Salle track/cross country seniors Kyle Dragan and Bill Keckeis have committed to Cincinnati. Dragan is a three-time All-American in the four-mile relay. Keckeis has been all-state in track (3,200 relay) and a two-time state qualifier in cross country.

Colleges

MASSA NAMED AD: Former Xavier University basketball player and administrator Laurie Massa was named athletic director at John Carroll. Massa, for the last 10 years as an administrator at South Carolina, spent her first 17 years in collegiate athletics at Xavier.

Elsewhere

NASCAR: Jamie McMurray was fined $10,000 and placed on probation until the end of August for spinning out Matt Kenseth at Bristol Motor Speedway.

HORSE RACING: Sinister G, upset winner of Turfway Park's Lane's End Stakes on March 20, was among 15 late Triple Crown nominations.

GOLF: David Duval withdrew from the Masters.
