DRY RIDGE - Kentucky State Police Trooper Kevin Flick pulled over a 1983 Chevrolet Caprice for speeding through a work zone on Interstate 75 near Crittenden on March 21. That simple violation resulted in two Florida men being charged with murder and robbery. Guns also were found inside the car, which turned out to be stolen.
On the day of the traffic stop, Flick charged the driver, Kenny McMillan, 20, of Winter Haven, Fla., with driving a stolen car on a suspended driver's license.
Another car traveling with McMillan got off the highway and looped back around as Flick arrested McMillan. The driver of that car, Norman J. Cole, 23, of Lake Alfred, Fla., was then arrested for driving with no license.
Only after the two men had been in the Grant County Jail for four days did police learn that they were wanted in a Florida homicide.
At that point, troopers got a search warrant for the cars, which had been impounded. Guns were found hidden inside the Caprice, in addition to a large cache of weapons in the trunk.
Kentucky State Police charged McMillan with receiving stolen property, speeding in a work zone, operating on a suspended license, possession of a defaced firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Cole was charged with driving with no operator's license.
McMillan and Cole were stopped in Northern Kentucky less than 24 hours after a killing in Auburndale, Fla.
About 3:30 a.m. on March 20, gunshots were reported in an Auburndale neighborhood. Police found the body of Michael Winesky, 18, near an intersection where they believe his body had been dumped, said Auburndale Police Chief Dean Longo.
The Auburndale Police Department later linked Cole and McMillan to the killing, Longo said.
On Thursday, Auburndale police obtained warrants for McMillan and Cole for first-degree murder and armed robbery.
"We started hearing rumors that they had been arrested in Kentucky," Longo said.
Police believe Winesky, who knew the pair, was killed during a robbery.
"We've gotten great assistance from the folks in Kentucky," he said.
McMillan and Cole remained in the Grant County jail Friday awaiting extradition.
