COVINGTON - Two people were killed early Saturday after the car in which they were riding crashed through a wrought-iron fence, became airborne and landed in the Ohio River.
Emergency crews worked for about eight hours to remove the vehicle and the victims, said Covington Police Sgt. Dennis Sparks.
Ricky Atwood, 45, of Brooksville, Ky., died along with Margaret Riegger, 59, of Cincinnati. Atwood had been staying with Riegger, Spc. George Russellsaid.
Investigators were still trying Saturday night to figure out what caused the crash, which happened about 1:15 a.m. at Riverside Drive and Shelby Street, a historic residential area. Investigators also did not know which of the occupants had been driving, Sparks said, although the green 1997 Pontiac was registered to Riegger.
Police still need witnesses, Russell said. He asked anyone who saw anything to call him at 859-292-2254.
Sparks said the last crash into the river in that area involved a failed suicide attempt several years ago.
