Set clocks, check smoke detectors

Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48 reminds homeowners to change the batteries in their smoke detectors during this morning's move to daylight saving time. (You should have moved your clocks forward one hour.) The firefighters' union also urges families to rehearse an evacuation plan, which should include knowing at least two ways out of the house and a safe meeting place once outside.

Highway Patrol taking applications

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is accepting trooper applications until July 31. Applications can be obtained by scheduling an appointment at any patrol post or the Patrol Training Academy, 740 17th Ave., Columbus. Information: (866) TROOPER or www.statepatrol.ohio.gov/jointheoshp.htm.

Taste of Cincinnati volunteers sought

Volunteers are being sought to staff the 2004 Taste of Cincinnati on Memorial Day weekend. The three-day fest spans four city blocks, from Elm Street to Main Street on Central Parkway. The hours for this year's event are noon to midnight May 29-30, and noon-9 p.m. May 31.

Monday deadline to register in Ind.

Monday is the last day to register to vote in the May 4 primary election in Indiana. Indiana residents who are not registered can do so in person at the county registration office or county clerk's office in the county where they reside. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by Monday.

Information and forms: www.sos.in.gov.

TRAFFIC WATCH

The right lane of Interstate 275 northbound, from Ohio 32 to the 32-mile marker, will be closed during installation of sound barriers until about May 31.

Watch for construction on I-275 between U.S. 42 (Reading Road) and U.S. 22 (Montgomery Road) as widening, pavement rehabilitation and the addition of an auxiliary lane westbound continues.
