Carl Baumes had career in finance, retired as tutor

Volunteer also helped at food pantry

By Nicole Hamilton
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LOVELAND - Carl Grenelle Baumes spent his career in finance in places like New York City and Stamford, Conn. And he spent his retirement years in Cincinnati, where he contributed his time to many volunteer efforts.

"He was very active in the United Methodist church, and would tutor math to help people get their GEDs. I don't think there was a person who didn't like him - he was a very patient, quiet, loving man," said his daughter, Christina L. Beatty of Mariemont.

Mr. Baumes died last Sunday at his Loveland home after an illness. He was 94.

Active in the Pheasant Hills Food Pantry for 29 years, where he helped pack food for the needy, Mr. Baumes also held various positions in the Kiwanis Club.

He and his late wife, Carolyn, moved to Cincinnati in 1975, to be closer to their daughter.

He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., before serving as a certified public accountant and administrator for IBM and Wallace Silversmith.

He also served as treasurer of the Jackson China Company of New York and president of the Hartford, Conn., chapter of the National Association of Accountants.

Before moving to Cincinnati, Mr. Baumes was executive director of finance and administration of the National Industrial Conference Board of New York.

His wife died in July 2001. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Baumes.

Besides his daughter, other survivors include another daughter, Patricia Snyder of Lancaster, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services have been held.

Burial was in Spring Grove.

Memorials can be made to United Methodist Church, 10975 S. Lebanon Road, Loveland 45140 or to Hospice of Cincinnati, P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati, OH 45263-3597.
