Roddick gears up for Swedes in Davis Cup

The Enquirer and wire reports

Andy Roddick is the ATP Tour's leader in matches won this year, is coming off a title at the Nasdaq-100 Open and has climbed back to the world's No. 2 ranking.

Roddick has lost only five of 31 matches this year, but two of those losses were straight-setters against Thomas Enqvist and Jonas Bjorkman. He'll face one of those two players Friday when Team USA and Sweden open their best-of-5 Davis Cup quarterfinal matchup in Delray Beach, Fla.

Roddick will be a big key if the Americans are to win their first Davis Cup title since 1995 and end the nation's longest drought in seven decades. He and Mardy Fish will play singles. Bob and Mike Bryan will be the doubles representatives for the Americans.

MARTINA'S MISSION: Martina Navratilova, 47, is making her first singles appearance in the United States in 10 years in this week's Bausch & Lomb Championships, a Tier II event at Amelia Island, Fla., she won three times during the 1980s - including the tournament's first title 25 years ago.

Basketball

ALL-STAR GAME: Xavier recruit Josh Duncan of Moeller will be among the players participating in the 13th annual Ohio-Kentucky All-Star Game on Saturday night at Thomas More College. Lisa Rusche of Oak Hills is on the Ohio girls' team.

The girls' game begins at 6 p.m. The boys' game follows at about 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at Connor Convocation Center, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Mason County's Chris Lofton, leading Mr. Basketball candidate, heads the Kentucky boys' squad.

Colleges

MIAMI FOOTBALL: Saturday's spring scrimmage was highlighted by the debut of basketball player Danny Horace (Western Hills) as a tight end. Horace took 15 snaps and also was tried at defensive end. The second scrimmage is Thursday.

UC SWIMMING: The women's swimming and diving team was named a 2004 Academic All-American Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Bearcats had a 3.255 GPA, ranking 35th among Division I squads.

Hockey

MIGHTY DUCKS: Anaheim assigned left wing Stanislav Chistov to AHL Cincinnati. Chistov, a first-round pick by Anaheim in 2001, had two goals and 16 assists in 56 games with Anaheim this season. He also has appeared in 20 games with Cincinnati this season, recording three goals and seven assists. Cincinnati reassigned center Igor Pohanka to ECHL San Diego.

BLUE JACKETS: Left wing Rick Nash, 19, has been selected to play for Team Canada in the world championships April 24 to May 9 in Prague, Czech Republic.

Horse racing

TURFWAY PARK: Although canceling nine whole cards and parts of six others during the winter-spring meet, the Northern Kentucky track posted increases in both on-track (3.9 percent) and all-sources wagering (19.8 percent) on Turfway races over the same period in 2003.

Rafael Bejarano won leading jockey honors, winning a record 150 races from 472 mounts and shattering the previous record for number of wins (111). Greg Foley was leading trainer, saddling 24 winners from 71 starters. Ronald McKay's M.Y. Stables Inc. led the owners with six victories.

HALL OF FAME NOMS: Jockey Jose Santos and trainer Nick Zito were among 13 jockeys, trainers and horses nominated for the shrine in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The nominees will be voted on by 140 members of the media, with an announcement set for May 25 and induction Aug. 9. Skip Away, Horse of the Year at age 5, is among the horses nominated.
