Cummins perks up earnings forecast

Cummins Inc. of Columbus, Ind., boosted its earnings forecast for the first quarter and the full year, citing strong sales of its diesel engines and better prospects among its customers. Its shares rose 6 percent. Cummins, which has seen its shares triple in price over the last year and a half, said Tuesday that improved sales and economic prospects have more than offset rising prices for commodities such as steel. For the January-March period, Cummins forecasts earnings in the range of 65 cents to 75 cents per share, compared with its previous guidance of 40 cents to 50 cents a share. Second-quarter earnings are forecast at $1 to $1.10 per share.
