GATEWAY - Mike King, instructor in the adult education program at Gateway Community and Technical College, has been selected as the national Teacher of the Year for the Council on Adult Basic Education. He will receive the award at the council's national convention in Columbus later this spring.
King has been teaching adult education since 1987, when he started in Williamsburg, Ky. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from Cumberland College.
King teaches literacy, GED and college prep courses but also taught in the welfare-to-work and teen parent programs.
Xavier adds programs in Ghana and India
XAVIER - Xavier University will begin academic service-learning semesters in two new locations, one in Ghana, starting in spring 2005 and one in India this fall. The program includes 12-15 credit hours. Students will live with host families and work at sites serving the poor.

Cincinnati State seeks award nominations
CINCINNATI STATE - The deadline for submitting nominations for the Distinguished Alumni Award at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is April 19.
The award will be presented June 19 during commencement. It is given to an alumni member who has distinguished himself through career, service to college or community involvement.

Miami students win scholarships
MIAMI - Three Miami University students have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, which provide up to $7,500 per year for college expenses for undergraduates in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.
Only 15 students from Ohio schools were selected.
The Miami winners are: Besma Abbaoui, a junior biochemistry major from Powell; Scott Gruenbaum, a junior chemistry/mathematics double major from Westerville; and Ethan Karp, a sophomore biochemistry/physics double major from Clarion, Pa.
NKU to host seminar on tech management
NKU - The Northern Kentucky University department of information systems and the Cincinnati-based company Cincom Systems will host a free half-day seminar on knowledge management technologies 8:30 a.m.-noon April 16 on NKU's Highland Heights campus.
The seminar, which is titled "The Business Value of Knowledge Management Technologies: An IT Management Roundtable," will teach Cincinnati-area business leaders to create real business value by using knowledge management technologies for solving distribution and logistics problems, configuring bank ATMs, insurance claims preapproval and streamlining student admissions processes.
