Undefeated Smarty Jones wins Arkansas Derby
The Associated Press
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - A horse from Pennsylvania is on his way to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.
Smarty Jones remained undefeated in six races, stalking Purge just as he had last month in the Rebel and charging past him on the turn to win the $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.
The victory Saturday gives Philadelphia-based trainer John Servis and jockey Stewart Elliott their first trip to the Kentucky Derby on May 1.
At Churchill, Smarty Jones will attempt to become the first undefeated Derby winner since Seattle Slew in 1977.
"I'm very fortunate to be in Philadelphia Park and to have the clients I have," Servis said. "I have good owners that give me the opportunity to get a hold of horses like this. When you get horses like this, it makes it real easy to get up in the morning."
Borrego finished second, 1 1/2 lengths behind Smarty Jones, while Pro Prado charged from seventh to third in front of 62,264 fans.
Wood Memorial
NEW YORK - Tapit is on his way to the Kentucky Derby.
Bouncing back from the only loss of his career, Tapit rallied from last place and caught Master David in the deep stretch to win the $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.
"Believe me, I am as surprised as anyone," trainer Michael Dickinson said after his big gray colt rebounded from a sixth-place finish in the Florida Derby last month.
The half-length victory stamps Tapit as one of the 3-year-olds to beat at Churchill Downs on May 1.
Tapit, ridden by Ramon Dominguez, earned $450,000 for the win and boosted his graded-stakes earnings to $530,000 - currently among the top five.
