Summerall gets liver transplant
The Enquirer and wire reports
Broadcaster Pat Summerall received a liver transplant Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., and was in stable condition in an intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The 73-year-old former NFL kicker had been on the waiting list at St. Luke's Hospital since April 2. Summerall, a recovering alcoholic, qualified for a transplant through blood tests that rank potential recipients anonymously. "We are extremely thankful that a compatible liver was donated and successfully transplanted," Summerall's wife, Cheri, said in a statement. "While our prayers have been answered, we also know another family is grieving over the loss of loved one. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers."
Nelson earns Wooden honor
Saint Joseph's guard Jameer Nelson won the John R. Wooden Award Saturday as the top college player. He edged Connecticut's Emeka Okafor in one of the closest votes since the award began in 1976; Nelson received 5,408 points to 5,215 for Okafor. Voting ended March 29, a week before Okafor led the Huskies to the national title.
"I can't express in words how much this means to receive an award with this man's name on it," Nelson said after accepting the trophy from Wooden. Nelson led Saint Joseph's to its first No. 1 ranking and a 30-2 record. Stanford's Josh Childress was third with 3,052 points.
Ducks lose, start playoffs on the road at Houston
Patrick Rissmiller recorded three goals and an assist as the Cleveland Barons beat the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks 8-3 Saturday at the Gardens.
The Barons claimed the inaugural Labatt Blue Cup with a 4-2-2-0 record against the Ducks this season.
Cleveland finished the regular season with a franchise-record 37 wins and a 45-point improvement over last season, best in the AHL.
The loss, coupled with Houston's win against Grand Rapids, dropped the Ducks into the fifth and final playoff spot in the West Division.
The Ducks begin a best-of-3 Calder Cup qualifying round series Thursday at Houston's Toyota Center. All games in the series will be played in Houston.
