Letters to the editor

Keep on searching, young worshippers

What an uplifting article ("Younger worshippers flock back to church," April 11).

Praise God. Fulfillment does not come from social status and other material things. Once you have truly found Jesus in your heart, there are no more voids in your life to fill. You will be empowered by the peace that takes place in your life. This kind of peace cannot be purchased. It comes to us from a higher power, and it is free.

If you are in a church where you are merely a bench warmer or you don't go to church at all, have the courage to step out of your comfort zone and look for the right place of worship. Celebrate the Lord in the place you feel most comfortable. Just keep searching. You will be glad you did. I sure am.

Good Friday 'Dateline' hurts city

How fitting that the telecast Dateline NBC was aired on Friday, April 9. What better date to crucify our city and our police force than Good Friday?

Armed pilots would've stopped 9-11

The April 11 Enquirer carried several columns and letters relating to the violence of Sept. 11. Not mentioned was a simple, low-cost method that could have prevented the tragedy. It's called arm the pilots. Post a warning: "Our airline intends to deliver its customers to their chosen destination. Any attempt to seize the aircraft to change that destination will be met with appropriate resistance. To carry out that promise, our pilots are armed for their safety and yours."

Years ago, several aircraft were hijacked by crazies who wanted to go to Cuba. If the first who wanted to go to Cuba had faced a gun, and told to go back and sit down, there would have been no further attempts.

Evidence lacking that guns save lives

The letter writer "Guns can be a civilizing presence" (April 11) repeats the National Rifle Association's big lie that guns make us safer. There is no evidence that law-abiding citizens save lives with guns. In the last year in Greater Cincinnati, there have been no reports of any lives saved by citizens with guns; rather, there have been some cases of children injuring themselves or others accidentally with guns. Furthermore, many of the guns that criminals carry have been stolen from the homes of gun owners.

According to FBI statistics, crime rates been falling everywhere, but no faster in states that permit concealed-carry than in states that outlaw it.

I will feel less safe not knowing who on the street is carrying a weapon. If I am a crime victim and you are not a trained law enforcement officer, please keep your gun holstered. As the shootout in Texas at the buffet restaurant several years ago showed, armed civilians would shoot each other, bystanders and possibly even police officers.

Guns don't kill all by themselves

In Jim Borgman's cartoon April 11 about "rights," which includes being fat from McDonald's, getting cancer from Phillip Morris and having a car wreck because of Jack Daniel's, he left out "Smith & Wesson made me kill." Personal responsibility is the key, as he correctly portrays. Guns don't kill by themselves any more than we gain weight by driving past McDonald's.

Allow younger voters, boost turnout

In regard to the letter "Even younger voters would be mistake" (April 10), I disagree that younger voters are not mature enough to vote. If a 16-year-old can drive or have a job, he or she should at least have the right to vote for the people in Washington who best support his or her interests.

After researching this topic for several weeks for a school project, I concluded that allowing citizens to vote at a younger age would increase voting turnout in the future. Nearly 100 million eligible voters did not go to the polls for the 1996 presidential race.

David Hood, Springfield Township
