UC, OSU, UK play spring tilts today

The Enquirer and wire reports

The University of Cincinnati, Ohio State and Kentucky will hold their spring games today.

First-year coach Mark Dantonio (above) divided his 86-plus Bearcats into two complete teams, and they will play under game-like conditions at 2 p.m. at Nippert Stadium. OSU's Scarlet and Gray game kicks off at 1:05 p.m. in Ohio Stadium. UK's Blue-White game is 1 p.m. today at Commonwealth Stadium.

Ducks vs. Admirals at Gardens tonight

Game 3 of the American Hockey League Western Division playoff series between the fifth-seeded Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and top-seeded Milwaukee Admirals is 7:35 p.m. today in Cincinnati Gardens. The best-of-7 series is tied 1-1.

The Ducks won Game 1 in overtime Wednesday and lost Game 2 Friday at the Bradley Center.

Maradona taken off life support

Diego Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, was taken off a respirator that has helped him breathe the past five days. Doctors replaced it with a plastic mask to provide him with oxygen. He remains in intensive care with severe heart and lung problems.

Kournikova sued by her parents

Anna Kournikova is being sued by her parents, who say she has taken over the Miami Beach waterfront home the three jointly own. Sergei and Alla Kournikova filed the lawsuit last week. They want the seven-bedroom home "partitioned," meaning they want money for their share of the home. It was bought for $5 million in 2000. Her agent, David Schwab, said he was unaware of the lawsuit.

Kournikova has never won a tournament and is known mostly for her supermodel looks. The Russian, 22, has not played competitive tennis in more than a year.

High schools

FOOTBALL: Purcell Marian has announced three more college commitments: OG Evan Dadosky (Air Force), LB/G Brandon Buschmeier (Carnegie Mellon) and OT Brian Kucia (Dayton). Purcell OL Khalil El-Amin (Cincinnati) and WR Dustin Woods (Miami University) already have signed letters of intent.

SOFTBALL: Ross coach Paul Fernandez recently won his 300th career game. Ross has won 12 league titles, seven districts and four regionals under Fernandez.

HALL OF FAME: The Badin/Hamilton Catholic Hall of Fame is adding new members Jim Briede (class of 1984), Dr. John DeFazio (1962), Dick Korb (1946), Tim Pfister (1969) and Terry Tallen (1977). Induction ceremonies are May 8 at the school. Information: 863-3993, ext. 116.

Tennis

MONTE CARLO: Marat Safin beat Alberto Martin 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at the Masters Seriese event, advancing to a semifinal matchup with clay-court expert Guillermo Coria. Coria defeated No. 7 seed David Nalbandian 6-4, 6-3 for his 24th straight win on clay. Coria has not lost on the surface since last June.

In the other semifinal today, Rainer Schuettler will meet 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya. The fourth-seeded Schuettler easily beat No. 6 seed Tim Henman 6-3, 6-1, and Moya downed Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 7-6 (4). Coria meets 2000 U.S. Open champion Safin for the first time.

FEDERATION CUP: The United States begins its bid to regain the Fed Cup with a match against Slovenia. Serena Williams is out with a knee injury, leaving sister Venus to lead the squad today in the first round of World Group play at Slovenia. Lisa Raymond, who played in last year's final, is back along with Martina Navratilova, 47, and Laura Granville.

Soccer

CREW: Columbus midfielder Frankie Hejduk, already fined $250 and suspended for a game for hitting a player during a match, has been fined an additional $500 by Major League Soccer.

Olympics

EQUESTRIAN: Kim Severson turned in the best score of the day to top the standings in her division after the dressage at the Rolex Three-Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Severson had just 37 penalties on Winsome Adante, the best score of her career with the bay gelding. She topped the standings in the four-star CCI in her quest to qualify her mount for the Olympics. Severson was sidelined for much of last year with a broken leg, and her horse had colic problems. The duo, part of the gold medal team at the World Equestrian Games in Spain two years ago, must complete Rolex - the key U.S. Olympic selection trial - to make the U.S. squad that goes to Athens.
