Maple Leafs make up ground against Flyers

The Associated Press

TORONTO - Alexander Mogilny scored on a breakaway to spark a three-goal outburst in the second period and help Toronto to a 4-1 playoff win over Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Alexei Ponikarovsky, Chad Kilger and Darcy Tucker also scored for the Leafs, who cut the Flyers' lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven, second-round playoff series.

Game 4 is Friday at Toronto.

Tony Amonte scored a power-play goal for the Flyers, who lost for only the second time in the postseason.

The Flyers lost their composure in the third period, taking three penalties in a span of 1:26. That included a slashing infraction to Marcus Ragnarsson for a two-handed chop across the back of Mogilny's legs. Mogilny was on the ice in pain for a few minutes, but he returned to the game.

SCHEDULE: Reducing the NHL schedule by 10 games is among topics being discussed by the league and its players association in attempting to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.

"To say we've had any serious negotiations or any tentative agreement on it would be an overstatement," NHL vice president Bill Daly said. "But certainly it's something that will probably come up in the course of these negotiations."

The NHL will meet with NHLPA officials in Toronto today in an effort to spur stalled negotiations. The collective bargaining agreement will expire Sept. 15, and today's meeting will be the first formal negotiation since Oct. 1.

The NHL has operated with an 82-game regular season since 1995-96. A 72-game schedule would be the shortest since teams played 70 games in 1966-67.
