Sister Caroline, 93, long-time teacher

Served Notre Dame de Namur for 71 years

By Rebecca Goodman
The Cincinnati Enquirer

READING - Caroline Humphreys was a sister of Notre Dame de Namur for 71 of her 93 years.

"She had an athletic vim and vigor to her," said her friend, Sister of Notre Dame Ann Feth.

Despite her diminutive stature, Sister Caroline was an enthusiastic basketball player in her youth. An energetic dancer, her forte was to pull a wallflower onto the dance floor at a reception or party.

Sister Caroline died Monday at Mount Notre Dame Health Center.

A native of Portsmouth, she held a bachelor's degree in education from Athenaeum of Ohio and a master's degree from Xavier University.

She spent 45 years teaching grades 1-9 at St. Mary School in Hamilton, the old St. Paul School in Cincinnati and at more than a dozen other schools in Columbus, Dayton and Chicago.

After she retired from teaching, she undertook a pastoral ministry to the elderly and infirm and learned to play guitar. She played at monthly birthday parties she threw for elderly parishioners and accompanied school choirs.

Sister Caroline retired in 1994.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services have been held. Burial was in the convent cemetery.

Memorials: Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund, 701 East Columbia Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45215.
