Mike Dehring wasn't really training for a marathon when he decided to run the Boston Marathon on April 18. But the 33-year-old St. Xavier head track coach and assistant cross country coach finished 60th overall among 16,743 finishers with a net time of 2:41.06. "I've been trying to run to stay in shape as much as anything else," said Dehring, who traveled to Massachusetts with his wife, Colleen, to compete. Dehring said he was surprised and thrilled with his finish in his first Boston Marathon - his fifth marathon overall. He was the 50th finisher among men and the 44th in the Open Division. St. Xavier coaches and teachers were so impressed with Dehring's finish, they announced it to the school the following week. "A lot of kids came up to me to tell me I did a good job, so that was a neat reaction." What's next for Dehring? After getting through the track season, he said he'd start considering October's Chicago Marathon.

The All Saints seventh-grade girls' basketball team posted a 25-1 record after winning the CYO League trophy for Division 7-1 and the runner-up trophy for the Large City School Division. The All Saints team also won the Roger Bacon Tournament, Mount Notre Dame Tournament, St. Elizabeth Seton Tournament and the All Saints Tournament. Team members are Christy Frietch, Kaitlin McCafferty, Madison Hubbard, Kiley Naylor, Amy Taylor, Amanda Wilken, Emily Broderick, Ali Puthoff and Leah Bublitz.

Cincinnati Junior Bowling Club: The club won all 12 events at the Cincinnati Invitational regatta held at Harsha Lake April 17. The boys' and girls' varsity and novice teams won 12 gold medals, three silver and three bronze. The regatta had 950 athletes from 24 Midwest rowing clubs. The varsity teams will compete in the Midwest Junior Rowing Championships at Harsha Lake May 15 and 16 and are expected to advance to the national competition in June. The girls have won five straight national titles and the boys have won three of the last five, said Jim Raphael, club president. The Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, which trains on the Licking River and (in the winter) at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse, consists of 150 athletes from 20 Tristate high schools.
