Clifton residents sweep Flying Pig races
By Colleen Kane
The Cincinnati Enquirer
For the second year in a row, Cincinnati natives brought home the bacon in the Flying Pig Marathon.
Clifton residents T.J. Lentz and P.J. Ball sped through chilly conditions and a constant drizzle this morning to become the Pig’s sixth men’s and women’s champions.
In the men’s race, 37-year-old Lentz fought through leg cramps after mile 16 to claim his first Pig title in 2:38:07. Lentz was never seriously challenged despite having to walk and run in spurts toward the end of the race. Thomas Yakowenko, of Metuchen, N.J., finished second in 2:43:29.
Ball, 25, won the women’s race in 3:05:52. She pulled away from second place Leslie Dorado at about mile 10 to win her first marathon title in four tries. Ball, a University of Cincinnati graduate student and former Bearcats distance runner, also won this year’s Humana Heart Mini-Marathon.
Despite the weather, a record 11,928 signed up to participate in the Pig’s weekend events, which included Saturday’s 5K race and the marathon, marathon relays and a 10K race Sunday.
In the day’s other events, the marathon’s two wheelchair participants dropped out of the race because of weather conditions. And Jeremy Borling, 23, of Chicago won the 10K title in 33:58.
