EAST WALNUT HILLS - Author Ann M. Martin is writing a story featuring a character created by Seven Hills Doherty School fifth-grader Peppar Cyr.
Martin selected Peppar as the grand prize winner from 10,000 entrants in the Storyworks Create A Character Contest.
Storyworks editor Barry Rust will present the award to Peppar and read Martin's story to the class during a morning visit to her school today.
The story Martin wrote about Peppar's character, Winifrid Talone, appears in the April/May edition of the magazine along with a brief interview about Peppar.
Mount Notre Dame High dean named
READING - A 1988 McAuley High School graduate will become Mount Notre Dame High School's academic dean July 14.
Karen Day replaces Thomas Geier, who has held the position for 14 years. Day joined the school in 1992 and has chaired the math department since 1995. She will continue to teach Advanced Placement calculus and co-moderate the school's Girls' Athletic Association.
She holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Cincinnati.
"Having come from a family that has valued and attended Catholic schools for more than a century, I am proud to continue this tradition by serving the Mount Notre Dame community as Academic Dean,'' Day said.
Badin/Hamilton alumni to be feted
HAMILTON - Five alumni of Stephen T. Badin/Hamilton Catholic will be inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame Saturday.
The inductees include Jim Briede (1982), Terry Tallen (1977), Tim Pfister (1969), John DeFazio (1962) and Dick Korb (1946).The family of John Kreke (1953) and Marian Messacar Kreke (1953) will be honored as the annual Legacy Award winners.
All will be honored during a dinner and induction ceremony in Badin's Mulcahey Gym, 571 New London Road. The evening begins with a 5:30 p.m. Mass followed by a cocktail hour, catered dinner and the induction program.

St. Xavier offers an evening of jazz
SPRINGFIELD TWP. - Tickets are on sale for St. Xavier High School's fifth annual Michael Benson Jazz Night, set for 7:30 p.m. Friday in the foyer of the school's intramural gymnasium, 600 W. North Bend Road.
The Brent Gallaher Quartet will join the St. Xavier Jazz Ensemble in the gymnasium, which will be set up like a jazz club. The Coffee Underground will sponsor a coffee bar.
Tickets are $10; $5 for students. They can be purchased at the door. Proceeds support the Michael Benson Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships and further education for St. Xavier's jazz musicians.
Roger Bacon plans senior fashion show
ST. BERNARD - "Starry, Starry, Night" is the theme of Roger Bacon High School's 11th Annual Senior Fashion Show at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the school's auditorium, 4320 Vine St.
The evening will open with a performance by the Spartan Express Choir. Seventy seniors and some faculty members will model the clothing. There will also be a split the pot, a jewelry grand raffle and a Chinese raffle.
Tickets are $18, which includes a boxed meal, dessert and beverage. Information: 641-1313.
Purcell Marian showcases research
EAST WALNUT HILLS - Purcell Marian students will end the school year with the third annual Sophomore Knowledge Fair, set for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 10-11, at the school, 2935 Hackberry St.
Sophomore English and history students will make presentations for parents, faculty and guests based on their independent research projects.
