Prom dress gifts help Ky. girls

Good Things Happening

Allen Howard

This is called Prom-n-Aid.

Two area students led a drive to collect gently used prom dresses for students in the Letcher County School District in Whitesburg, Ky., so the girls there could attend their high school prom.

Debbie Nieman and Emily Angner, both juniors at Mother of Mercy High School in Westwood, started the drive to collect 10 or 12 dresses after hearing of the plight of the Whitesburg students.

"We actually collected close to 50 dresses and accessories in less than two weeks,'' Debbie said. "We passed out letters, fliers to students and parents who responded generously."

Saturday, girls in the Whitesburg High School will be attending the prom, decked out in dresses and accessories acquired through the Prom-n-Aid project, said Libby Honeycutt, coordinator of the school's youth service center.

Information about the students at Whitesburg came from Roxanne Brett, president of Arbitration Solutions Inc., who knew Honeycutt.

Whitesburg is an Appalachian coal mining community where the poverty level is high.

Arbitration Solutions helped provide Debbie and Emily with guidance and other resources they needed for their letter campaign, Brett said.

"The success of this project is simply a testament to what is right with kids today," Brett said.

Kitna runs for kids

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna is keeping in shape, walking and running in the Kid's Fun Run.

On May 1, he ran in the Kid's Fun Run and 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by the Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Symmes Township.

Kitna's son, Jordan, attends the school. The race and an auction raised $200,000 for the school. The events were part of the school's Celebration Auction week.

Not only did Kitna complete the race, but he signed mini footballs and T-shirts.

His efforts were appreciated, but statistics show he failed to nail down a win. Roy Jones of Loveland was first in the 5K run and Camille Lloyd of Sharonville won the 5K walk
