More expensive houses sold in Clifton last year than in 2002, accounting for a 20.8 percent rise in its average home sale price, the biggest in Southwest Ohio.

Twenty-nine Clifton homes, typified by a variety of architectural styles and ages, sold for $300,000 or more in 2003, up 81 percent from 2002.
"You can buy something of significance for less than $1 million, and Clifton is growing in desirability because it's a pedestrian-friendly community," said Barbra Druffel, a Realtor at Comey & Shepherd.
Clifton's housing has character - a blend of Tudor, Victorian, German four-square, Cape Cod and even castle-like mansions that fetch prices from $100,000 to $900,000. Close to the University of Cincinnati, Clifton also is known for a diverse mix of residents and entertainment.
Being within strolling distance of where they work, play or shop were among factors that convinced Michael and Marianne Brunner to buy a three-bedroom, red-brick house in Clifton.
The couple, who moved from Winton Place, now live near Findlay Market, the IGA grocery store and Esquire movie theater.
Michael, 50, is an engineer at the architect's office at UC. Marianne, 46, works at the Deaconess Medical Building.
The Brunners' four-square German-style home is 77 years old. Its oak floors, a big deck with a view of the valley and a finished basement with a sunroom were among the house's selling points. Homes on their block range in value from about $315,000 to $600,000.
