Four years ago, Chicago native Mike Sosin walked into orientation at Miami University as a scared freshman. On Saturday, he left the university as a confident college graduate.
The 21-year-old journalism major was one of 3,615 students to receive diplomas at the university's 165th annual commencement.
"It's really surreal," Sosin said. "I guess it hasn't really hit me yet that I'm graduating, and it won't until I walk across the stage."
Thousands of family and friends stood proudly under the hot sun at Yager Stadium to cheer the class of 2004 during a university-wide commencement address Saturday afternoon.
"It's a little sad because she's made some good friends here," said Libby Dixon, who came from Bowling Green to watch her daughter, Kelly, graduate.
Sosin, who attended the afternoon program, also walked in a recognition ceremony for the College of Arts and Science later that night. Divisional ceremonies for undergraduate degree candidates will be held through today.
Jehan Sadat, widow of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, was the commencement speaker and received an honorary degree for her role in the development of women's rights in the Middle East.
Sadat was first lady of Egypt from 1970 to 1981.
"As you commence on your journey from this place to the life awaiting you, never stop learning and search for ways to make a difference in the life of others. Go forth with minds eager to learn and hearts rich in compassion and love for others," Sadat told the graduates.
University officials awarded 163 associate's degrees, 3,206 bachelor's degrees, 234 master's degrees, and 12 doctor of philosophy degrees.
"Through all the ups and downs of college life you've also been able to get a good education and make friends of a lifetime," James Garland, Miami University president, said. "It has been great knowing you and having you here."
