Police ceremony at noon today

Staff/Wire reports

Greater Cincinnati law enforcement agencies mark national Police Memorial Week today with a noon ceremony on Fountain Square and a parade to the police memorial in the West End.

In addition, each Cincinnati police district will host an open house, where neighbors can talk to officers and see various police tools, like a crime-scene van. District 5, in Clifton, held its open house Monday. The schedule for the others, all from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: District 1, 310 Ezzard Charles, West End, today; District 2, 3295 Erie Ave., Hyde Park, Wednesday; District 4, 4150 Reading Road, Paddock Hills, Thursday; District 3, 3201 Warsaw Ave., Price Hill, May 18.

Luken staffer to work for Kerry

Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken's press secretary will take a leave to become the Ohio spokesman for the presidential campaign of Democrat John F. Kerry. Brendon Cull, 27, of Over-the-Rhine, will get a six-month leave from the mayor's office. The Kerry campaign said other key postings would be announced soon. Brooke Hill, an unpaid political adviser to Luken, will fill in as the mayor's part-time press secretary.

Work planned on interstates

• Northbound Interstate 75/71 will be restricted to one lane between the Buttermilk Pike and Kyles Lane exits in Kenton County from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. nightly through Thursday.

• Crews will be working in both directions on Interstate 75 between Glendale Milford Road and I-74 and on I-71 between Kennedy Avenue and Kenwood Road in Hamilton County. Watch for lane closures from 10 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. beginning tonight and continuing nightly Monday-Thursday until May 27.

Somerville Road in Milford Twp. will be closed at the Norfolk and Southern railroad crossing between U.S. 127 and Hamilton Eaton Road for crossing replacement. It will be reopened next week.

CORRECTION: Land purchase not among biggest

The recent purchase of property for conservation in Anderson Township was not one of the township's largest acquisitions. A story in Sunday's Local News section was incorrect.
