Hamm to retire after Olympics

Staff/Wire reports

Mia Hamm, the top scorer in international soccer history and a key player on U.S. teams that won World Cups and gold medals, said she will retire after this year's Olympics.

Hamm, 32, said she took her cue from the retirement speech last year by Pete Sampras, who won a record 14 Grand Slam tennis singles titles.

"The answer is yes," Hamm said when asked at a news conference in New York whether the Athens Games would be her last major competition. "As Pete said, sometimes you just know the time is the right time. I've enjoyed every minute and I've learned a lot, but it's time to take the next step in my life."

Hamm said her options after soccer might include starting a family with husband Nomar Garciaparra, the Boston Red Sox's All-Star shortstop.

"I might want to have children, and I want to reconnect with my family, which was always there for me," she said. "I want to be the best wife I can be."

Team USA adds James, Stoudemire

LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire, the NBA's last two rookies of the year, were among five players added Friday to this year's Olympic basketball team, along with New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, New Jersey Nets forward Richard Jefferson and Phoenix Suns forward Shawn Marion. James, 19, will become the youngest U.S. Olympic men's basketball player since Spencer Haywood in 1968.

Flyers lose D-man with broken finger

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Marcus Ragnarsson will miss the rest of the playoffs after breaking his left index finger in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. Game 4 between the Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning is at 3 p.m. today (Ch. 9, 2). The Lightning lead the best-of-7 series 2-1.

Football games set for local TV

Cincinnati television station FOX19 will broadcast the inaugural FOX19 Prep Classic on Sept. 5, a rare instance of high school football games being shown on over-the-air TV. The telecast, from Paul Brown Stadium, will include live coverage of the Moeller-Louisville St. Xavier game at noon and Elder-Highlands at 2:30 p.m. The 5 p.m. Colerain-Anderson game will be tape-delayed until 11 p.m. Ticket prices for the games will be $10 pre-sale and $15 game day.

Jones says he'll beat Tarver again tonight

Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver meet again tonight in Las Vegas for the WBC light heavyweight title Jones took from Tarver in November.

"His whole legacy is on the line whether he realizes it or not," Tarver (21-2, 17 knockouts) said. "We are stuck together like Siamese twins in history."

Jones, who had to move to the heavyweight division for his last challenge, has found one in his natural weight class in the brash Tarver. He seems motivated to put on a show, and prove at the age of 35 that he still retains most of the skills that made him such a dominant fighter.

The scheduled 12-round fight will be televised on pay-per-view. Jones weighed 174 pounds to 175 for Tarver.

Jones (49-1, 38 knockouts) looked old, sloppy and out of shape in the first fight but still escaped with a controversial majority decision.

"He wasn't going to beat Roy Jones the first time when he was lackluster," Jones said. "Now I'm right - you're so bad, beat me."
