Public Safety briefs

Mom, sitter charged with endangering

BETHEL - The mother of a 3-year-old boy and his baby sitter were charged with child endangering Saturday after the boy was found playing in a water-filled ditch three blocks from the baby sitter's apartment.

Officer Steve Teague was on patrol when he found the toddler near the intersection of W. South and McMurchey streets about 8:50 a.m., said Officer Merv Clemons.

The child was taken to county Child Protective Services, while police and firefighters went door to door searching for the boy's relatives, Clemons said. The search lasted five hours before police received a call from the boy's mother, he said.

The mother, Ruby Sparks, of Covington, and the baby sitter, Charles Trumble, of the 200 block of W. South St. - both in their mid-20s - were charged with child endangering, Clemons said.

Sparks told police she had been visiting a friend in Trumble's apartment building and had left her son with Trumble while she went to work. The boy had apparently opened the door of the apartment and crossed heavily traveled Ohio 133 to get to the ditch, Clemons said.

Police: Victim wrestles gun away, hits robber

A man was beaten as he attempted to rob another person in the hallway of a Vine Street apartment building Friday night, police said.

The incident occurred about 9 p.m. at 1344 Vine St.

Police said Sehey Fray, 20, address not given, allegedly tried to rob a person at gunpoint. During the incident, the victim managed to wrestle the handgun away from Fray and beat him over the head. Fray then fled the scene, police said.

Police later apprehended Fray. The victim identified him, police said.

Fray was treated at University Hospital for minor injuries and later arrested.

2 Wyoming firefighters injured during training

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP - Two Wyoming firefighters were injured during an exercise Saturday afternoon when they fell from a roof at the Colerain Township Fire Department training facility.

Firefighters Bryant Davis and Jon Glassman were in fair condition Saturday night at University Hospital.

Wyoming Fire-EMS Chief Robert Rielage said the two veteran firefighters were involved in live training when a ladder that was hooked over the peak of a roof "for some reason became unhooked," causing them to fall 20 to 30 feet to the asphalt pavement.

Both firefighters suffered fractures in the fall.

"There appear to be no life-threatening injuries," Rielage said.

About 20 of the department's firefighters were taking part in the exercises at the training facility at 4200 Springdale Road.

Man stabbed in liquor store parking lot

COVINGTON - A 30-year-old man was stabbed in the parking lot of Dep's Liquor Friday night, police said.

The incident in the 400 block of Russell Street occurred about 8 p.m.

Covington police refused to released the victim's name, address or extent of his injuries.

Police had no suspects as of Saturday, said Lt. Bill Maurer.
