Report: Williams faces drug fine

The Enquirer and wire reports

Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams faces a $650,000 fine following his second violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy, the Palm Beach Post reported. According to the report, Williams failed a drug test Dec. 10.

This follows a prior failed test soon after he arrived in Miami after being traded from the New Orleans Saints in May 2002. When reached by the paper, Williams said his status with the league was clear. "I'm in good standing with the NFL and the Dolphins," Williams told the Post. Sources, however, told the Post that Williams appealed the fine for this latest apparent transgression at the NFL headquarters April 16. Williams denied that his visit to NFL headquarters was related to a drug policy violation.

South Africa hosts 2010 World Cup

NCAA: Snyder derelict in duties

Missouri basketball coach Quin Snyder is accused by the NCAA of recruiting violations and providing meals and gifts of clothing for his own players, documents obtained by the Associated Press show.

Snyder is named in 17 allegations, dating between 1999 and last year, in the NCAA's formal notice of alleged rule violations. The university last week released the list of allegations with names of school employees and students blacked out.

But in response to an AP request under Missouri's open records law, the university provided a version Saturday naming the staffers. Students' names were still blacked out, with the school citing federal privacy law. The NCAA accused Snyder of recruiting violations including calling, making personal contact with and providing meals for prospective players. It also alleged Snyder provided meals and gifts for his players.

The university is to formally respond to the allegations by July 1, and hearings by the NCAA's infractions committee are scheduled Aug. 13-15 in Seattle.

NKU GOLF: Norse junior Kim Keyer-Scott's 85 Saturday dropped her to a tie for 16th to close out the NCAA Division II Championships in Longwood, Fla. Keyer-Scott carded a four-round total of 314; Rollins College's Charlotte Campbell won the title with a 299.

• In men's action, the Norse finished 17th of 18 teams with a total score of 1,281 in DeLand, Fla. South Carolina-Aiken combined for 1,191 strokes to win the championship.

MOUNT ST. JOE BASEBALL: The Lions (22-21) play 20th-ranked Manchester College (31-10) at 1 p.m. today in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship game on the Indiana school's field. The winner receives an automatic bid to next week's NCAA Division III Tournament.

UC TRACK AND FIELD: With three individual champions, led by hurdler David Payne, the Bearcats captured the Conference USA Outdoor Championship at Louisville's Cardinal Park. The Bearcats had 159.5 points to 120 for runner-up Houston. On the women's side, Cincinnati placed sixth of 13 squads with 48 points.

MIAMI SOFTBALL: The Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game between Miami and Bowling Green, from the loser's bracket, has been postponed by rain until noon today. The RedHawks are undefeated in the double-elimination event. A victory would secure an NCAA Tournament berth for MU.

Tennis

HAMBURG MASTERS: Roger Federer showed why he's No. 1, overwhelming Lleyton Hewitt 6-0, 6-4 in an hour to reach the final. Federer's opponent will be defending champion Guillermo Coria, who rallied to beat Ivan Ljubicic 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Coria won his 31st straight match on clay, dating to the 2003 French Open semifinals.

ITALIAN OPEN: Jennifer Capriati beat an error-prone Serena Williams 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals at Rome. Her opponent in the clay-court final will be Amelie Mauresmo, who defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-3. Capriati had dropped eight straight matches against Williams.

Elsewhere

SOCCER: Arsenal completed the first unbeaten league season in 115 years at the top English level, rallying for a 2-1 home victory against Leicester. Arsenal (26-0-12) already had clinched the Premier League title and finished with 90 points.

HOCKEY: Suspended Vancouver forward Todd Bertuzzi was left off Canada's World Cup roster. Paul Kariya, Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau, Jose Theodore and Brendan Shanahan also were among the notable omissions from executive director Wayne Gretzky's team.
