FAIRFIELD - Instead of a class gift, the eighth grade at Sacred Heart School has decided to help the family of a 2-year-old Fairfield boy who has a rare autoimmune disease, IgA pemphigus.
The child's antibodies attack his skin, causing large, painful blisters.
Without treatment, he has little chance of survival.
The class is holding a car wash fund-raiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school, 400 Nilles Road. P
roceeds will go to the child's family to defray medical and travel costs to Houston, where he will go for treatment. Information: 858-4215.
McAuley welcomes junior-high visitors
COLLEGE HILL - McAuley High School will host its second annual Seventh Grade Showcase Thursday.
Junior high school girls and their parents may tour the all-girls campus from 6-7:30 p.m. Administrators and teachers will be available to answer questions. Information: 681-1800, ext. 2272.
Tower Titans seek football players
GREEN TWP. - The Tower Titans are looking for prospective football players for the 2004 season.
The team is composed of seventh- and eighth-grade students who are unable to play football because they attend schools that don't offer the sport, or who are over the weight limit for their leagues.
Registration will be at 7 p.m. May 27 and June 16 behind LaSalle High School, 3091 North Bend Road. Practices and home games will be held at LaSalle. Information: John Bosse, 741-2368.
St. Susanna teacher nominated for honor
MASON - A St. Susanna School first-grade teacher was nominated for the 2003-04 Disney Outstanding Teacher Award.
Linda Pitrelli was ranked 47th nationally. She has taught first grade at St. Susanna for 17 years.
Queen of Peace wins education grant
HANOVER TWP. - Queen of Peace School has won a $5,000 education grant from QSP, the educational fund-raising arm of Reader's Digest.
The award is one of only eight won by schools across the country involved in an early fund-raising entry contest.
Principal Bernadette Zimmerman said the grant would be used to advance technology in the school. A series of meetings with teachers will determine what the priorities will be for the grant money.
Summit Country Day volunteers awarded
COLUMBIA TWP. - Deupree Community Meals on Wheels volunteers from Summit Country Day School were recently honored with the John Wycliffe Fleming Youth Award, presented by the Council on Aging in Southwestern Ohio.
The award recognizes school classes, organizations or clubs in grades 1-12 that have focused time and energy on bettering the lives of older adults in the community. For four years, Summit students have volunteered with the Deupree Community Meals on Wheels program.
Venice Presbyterian Preschool turns 25
ROSS TWP. - The Venice Presbyterian Preschool will celebrate its 25th anniversary Sunday at the school, 4244 Layhigh Road. Former teachers and students are invited to attend the 10:30 a.m. worship service followed by activities. Information: 738-0158.
