Cicada items keep emerging
Style extra
We've seen some crazy items being marketed for the cicada invasion, including the clear bubble umbrellas by totes for $22 at Bankhardt's (downtown and Kenwood Towne Centre), Lazarus-Macy's and the totes Isotoner outlet store on Kemper Road.
But Taylor Jameson, owner of the Northside salon bearing her name, might get a prize for most creative idea. Last week, she had a noon showing of hairstyles complete with cicada shell trims. For several of the upcoming weeks she is offering a "2-for-1 Cicada Red" offer. If you and a friend both want to dye your hair Cicada Red, Jameson will charge only half the normal cost. The offer will be on the table during the emergence. 4200 Hamilton Ave. Information: 541-3332.
In the cicada jewelry aisle: We ran across a pretty little cicada pin by Lisa Hueil Conner of the Clay Alliance for $15 (481-3224). A little steeper up the price line is the jade cicada necklace, designed by Barbara Westwood sold at James Free Jewelers in Montgomery, $1,400. The Colorado artist says the cicadas "are meant to mean eternal or immortal life. The ancients celebrated the cicada, so why can't we?" She chose jade because of its mystical qualities. Information: 793-0133.
Brad puts away "skirt": Actor Brad Pitt finally took off his metal "skirt" from the Greek epic Troy and began his promotion rounds dressed in something a bit more spiffy. He contacted Milan-based designer Neil Barrett, a Brit, and ordered up several expertly-cut suits. Pitt appeared on Good Morning America and Late Night with Conan O'Brien in his new togs.
Romualdo skews younger: Due to the efforts of two twentysomething employees, Romualdo's in Madeira is adding several hot new designers whose clothing is moving on the West Coast. Owners Trevor and Wendy Furbay says the shop is the only retail store in town to stock 7 Diamonds shirts with their slim fit for $65-$100, and has added the largest pick of Robert Graham shirts in the region in his signature bright colors. Shirts, ties, cufflinks and accessories from Cincinnati's own John Bartlett (now in New York) are on the way, along with lines from Martin Gordon, Schneiders of Salzburg, Alara and Southwick Tailored Clothing. 7121 Miami Ave. Information: 561-9010.
Benefit shades: Sunglasses from Dior, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Kate Spade are part of the fund-raising efforts of QVC's seventh Cure by the Shore, 3-5 p.m. Saturday on the shopping channel to raise money for multiple sclerosis research and education. Shoes for a cause: Spring and summer shoes and clothes from Arte, Deja Shoe, Giorgio Brutini, La Scarpa and Suki will be on the runway Friday at Club Clau in Over-the-Rhine benefiting Dress for Success, a nonprofit group that helps low-income women make the transition into the job market. Local charities sell tickets for $5, all of which goes to the charity. Ticket holders receive a book with savings of 10 to 50 percent for the event, plus $5 off the first purchase.
