TV Best Bets

Gannett News Service

Worth watching

Legally Blonde (2001), 8-10 p.m., Channels 19, 45. On rare occasions, a movie can be entertaining without being especially clever or witty.

This paper-thin plot has a silly, boy-crazy coed going to Harvard Law School. Beneath that hot-pink surface, people learn, is a sharp mind.

This works because Reese Witherspoon gives the character buoyant joy and director Robert Luketic provides a glowing look. Audiences are soon carried away by the spirit.

The Best Man (1999), 8-10 p.m., Channel 25. Malcolm Lee wrote and directed this comedy-drama and produced it with his cousin, Spike. It is set at a wedding, where an author (Taye Diggs) is surrounded by people he has portrayed negatively.

Critics liked the film in moderation, except for its length. It could be helpful that a half-hour will be trimmed for TV.

Joan of Arcadia, 8 p.m., Channels 12, 7. This series wraps up its excellent first season with Joan having some doubts about God.

The George Lopez Show, 8-9 p.m., Channels 9, 2. In the hour-long season finale, George fears that his daughter is being cheated by her boy friend. What he discovers isn't what he was looking for.

20/20, 9-11 p.m., Channels 9, 2. Tentatively scheduled is a look at the many sides of sibling relations.

JAG, 9 p.m., Channels 12, 7. The season ends with unhappy news for both Harm and Mac.

CSI: Miami, 10 p.m., Channels 12, 7. This rerun involves the brutal break-in at the home of a former surfing star.

Other news

Dipping deep into its vaults, CBS has come up with two more reunion specials for next season.

The cast of Dallas will reunite at the show's Southfork Ranch to reminisce about the seminal prime-time soap in one, while the stars of One Day at a Time will also look back at their time on the network.

Sweeps Spotlight

Daytime Emmy Awards, 9 p.m., Channels 5, 22.

This show tends to have flash, fun and interesting people. This year's nominees range from Martha Stewart to (as cartoon voices) Walter Cronkite and the late John Ritter.

There's no Susan Lucci nomination this year. The biggest soap names are Anthony Geary, Eric Braeden and Kim Zimmer, the three-time winner who is Reva Shayne Lewis Spaulding Lewis Cooper Lewis on Guiding Light.

General Hospital has two nods for best actor (Geary and Maurice Benard) and best actress (Nancy Lee Grahn and Tamara Braun).

Other actresses: Zimmer, Maura West of As the World Turns, Michelle Stafford of The Young and the Restless. Others actors: Braeden of The Young and the Restless, Roger Howarth of As the World Turns, Grant Aleksander of Guiding Light, Thorsten Kaye of Port Charles.

The new Ellen (DeGeneres) show has 12 nominations, more than any nonsoap, including ones for best talk show and host. In those two categories, she faces Dr. Phil, The View, The Wayne Brady Show and Live with Regis and Kelly.
