The Cincinnati Enquirer
The next American Idol will be one of two young women, but that's all we know for sure. Fox's hit TV talent show has dealt viewers a series of surprises, thanks to viewers' voting.
The field of 70,000 who tried out starting last summer has been narrowed to:
Fantasia Barrino, a 19-year-old single mom from High Point, N.C., whose singing has been praised by judges, and Diana DeGarmo, a perky 16-year-old from Snellville, Ga., whose talent and style, judges say, has grown.
The women take the stage tonight (8 p.m., Channels 19, 45). Both will sing I Believe, which was co-written by Tamyra Gray, last season's fourth-place finisher.
Only one will be crowned Wednesday night in a two-hour show (8 p.m.), but both are likely to remain in the spotlight. Last year's runner-up, Clay Aiken, is a star, and Gray, who sang two songs on American Idol last week, releases her album, The Dreamer, today.
