Boutique shopping can be affordable

Style extra

If your fashion radar hasn't led you to Tiffiny's Catwalk Boutique in Pleasant Ridge, check your transmitter.

It's boutique shopping without the often-steep boutique prices, put together by Tiffiny VanJohnson, a University of Cincinnati graduate in the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.

"I don't think boutique prices have to be exorbitant," says the mother of two.

She's spiffed up an older home with leopard-print carpeting and turned each room - including kitchen and bathroom - into a display of casual and dressy clothes, shoes, jewelry, accessories and lingerie beyond what you'll find in New York and Chicago.

"I like things that are stylish but classically chic," she says. That translates into clothes that are fluid, sexy, fun and, best of all, not limited to small sizes. VanJohnson has searched out designer styles up to size 2X.

Lines include Nicole Miller and Cynthia Steffe, with accessories from all over the United States and Europe.

"I thought about being a personal shopper because I love to shop. Instead, I can create that kind of atmosphere in this store, helping people put things together," VanJohnson says.

Don't skip the second floor, "Tiffiny's Closet," with 25-50 percent savings.

Open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. 6058 Montgomery Road (at Losantiville). Information: 396-6228.

Wedding Barbie: It's the wedding season and David's Bridal stores have a dolled-up, limited-edition collectible - Unforgettable Barbie - resplendent in a princess-cut ball gown with tulle skirt modeled after one of David's Bridal's best-selling dresses. Barbie also comes with tiara, jewelry, bouquet, opera gloves and shoes. $45 at David's stores.

Tootsie Tanner: There's no need for golfers, tennis players, runners and those with smoothly tanned legs to be stuck with pasty white "sock" feet this summer. The Tootsie Tanner, developed by a trio of Texas golfers, is a foot tanning bed that plugs into a standard outlet and has a built-in timer and automatic shut-off. $169.95 at www.tootsietanner.com.

Sewing and quilt festival: Hands-on workshops, presentations, fashion shows, an antique sewing tool display, and shopping for sewing, embroidery, fabrics, notions, appliques and quilting are part of the Sew-Quilt & Embroidery Festival June 18-20 at Sharonville Convention Center. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 18-19 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 20. Information: (800) 472-6476.

Brides exhibit: If you think today's brides require extensive paraphernalia, get a look at the vintage bridal gowns and trousseau items displayed at the Promont Museum in Milford 1:30-4:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in June. Items include satin lingerie, nightcaps, camisoles, crochet and leather gloves, purses, perfume bottles and hairpins.

Promont, 906 Main St., is the former home of John Pattison, the 43rd governor of Ohio. The Italianate mansion was built 1865-1867.

Museum admission: $3, $1 children. Information 248-0324.

To be included in Style Extra, send information about a salon, beauty, fashion or personal grooming event to Joy Kraft at least two weeks before the date by fax: 768-8330;
