Haas debuts in thick of Senior PGA hunt

The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE - First-round co-leader Jay Haas, making his Champions Tour debut, bogeyed two of his last four holes Friday and was one of three players at 3-under par in the rain-delayed Senior PGA Championship.

Wayne Levi, 52, made four birdies just before the second round was suspended because of darkness; he held a one-shot lead. Levi was one of 72 players who completed his first round at Valhalla Golf Club. Levi shot an opening 69, then made the four birdies through the first 11 holes of his second round to move to 6 under.

Gil Morgan was 5 under through 11 on his second round when play was stopped. Hale Irwin and Tom Watson, among 78 players who did not begin their second rounds, were another stroke back at 4 under. Then came Haas.

• Arnold Palmer, 74, withdrew because of a hip injury. Palmer shot an opening 86 Thursday and noticeably limped throughout his round. Afterward, he complained about his play, not his health. "There is no coordination or anything in my game," Palmer said.

PGA TOUR: Defending champion David Toms had his best round this year, an 8-under 63, and held a one-stroke lead over Vaughn Taylor after the second round of the St. Jude Classic in Memphis. Toms had six birdies and an eagle for his 10th straight round in the 60s. He was at 12-under 130.

LPGA TOUR: Michelle Estill shot an 8-under 64 and was one stroke in front of Annika Sorenstam (67) after two rounds at the Corning (N.Y.) Classic. Estill was at 13-under 131, one stroke better than the 36-hole record set last year by Lorie Kane and Catriona Matthew. Sorenstam was alone in second, four shots ahead of 2001 Corning champ Carin Koch, who had a 68.

EUROPEAN PGA TOUR: Justin Rose shot a 6-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead over Ernie Els and three others in the second round of the Volvo Championship at Virginia Water, England.
