DELHI TWP. - A 1-year-old boy died at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center after a vehicle rolled backward out of a driveway here Saturday night and struck the child, police said.
About 9 p.m. Saturday, Colin Sunderman was seated in a stroller near the driveway of 4442 Valence Drive, where his parents live.
The parents' vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, rolled out of the driveway, trapping the stroller and the child under it, police said.
"It's an awful family tragedy," said Cpl. Jeff S. Braun of the Delhi Township Police Department. "It's something that happened so quickly."
Colin was flown by University Air Care to Children's Hospital in Corryville, where he later died.
At the time of the accident, the St. Dominic Church festival was going on nearby on Delhi Pike. Plenty of festival-goers were parked on the street, police said.
"Right now we're looking for any witnesses, any people who saw anything," Braun said.
Police canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses Sunday but had little luck.
Police have not yet interviewed the boy's parents about the accident.
"We'll give the parents a couple days," Braun said. "We're still investigating and looking for the missing piece of the puzzle, but obviously everyone is in a state of shock right now."
Police are asking for any witnesses to the accident to call Delhi police at 513-922-0060.
