MU's Kremer qualifies for third NCAA track meet

The Enquirer and wire reports

Miami University senior Andrea Kremer qualified for her third NCAA Championships by finishing four in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA women's track and field regional at Baton Rouge, La.

Kremer became Miami's only automatic qualifier when she ran a season-best 10:15.60. She earned All-America honors in the steeplechase as a freshman and junior, and entered the regionals as the defending regional champion.

Freshman Lashonda Davis could join Kremer at the national meet when at-large bids are announced today. Davis took ninth in the long jump Friday, but she entered the weekend ranked 16th in the nation with her school-record jump of 20-7 1/2.

• Two RedHawks men, junior Erik Reynolds (Lakota East) and freshman Jake Dunkleberger, qualified for the national meet June 9-12, in Austin, Texas. Reynolds cleared a personal-best 6-11 in the high jump to tie for fourth, while Dunkleberger took third in the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 210-5 to advance.

To qualify for the NCAA Championship meet, an athlete must finish in the top five of the regional, or be ranked among the top six to eight in the nation that did not qualify at the regionals.

OSU BASEBALL: Minnesota took advantage of Ohio State's lack of available pitching to clinch its first Big Ten tournament championship since 2001 with a 7-3 triumph Sunday at Siebert Field.

Junior center fielder Mike Rabin (Lakota East) was 3-for-4 to lead the Buckeyes.

The loss prevented OSU from becoming the first school to win the Big Ten tournament three years in a row. OSU (36-25) hopes for an at-large bid for a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is at noon today (ESPN2).

REGIONAL SITES: Defending College World Series champion Rice was one of 16 schools selected Sunday as regional site hosts for the NCAA Division I baseball tournament. The Owls (42-12), with their highly touted trio of right-handers Jeff Niemann, Wade Townsend and Philip Humber - all possible top 10 picks in next Monday's amateur draft - are hosting for the fourth time and attempting to become just the fifth repeat CWS winner.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Lisa Dodd drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the top of the 12th and defending champion UCLA beat Stanford 3-1 to advance to today's championship game of the NCAA Women's College World Series.

The Bruins are in the title game for the 17th time in 23 years. UCLA (46-9) has won 10 national titles.

UCLA will play California (52-11) or LSU (56-11). LSU stayed alive with a 4-1 win against California to force another game between the two teams late Sunday.

Horses

CHURCHILL DOWNS: The $150,000 Dogwood Breeders' Cup was among the races canceled Sunday because of severe weather. Track officials canceled the last six scheduled races.

TURFWAY PARK SHOW: More than 100 horses representing about 300 entries are expected at the fourth annual All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show on Saturday at the Northern Kentucky race track. Presented by ReRun and New Vocations, both horse adoption charities, the show features ex-racehorses that have been adopted and retrained as show or pleasure horses.

Other thoroughbreds will participate as well. Organizers have scheduled 49 classes for the daylong show, which begins at 8 a.m. Admission is free.

This year's show will have Rich In Dallas, one of 10 horses that portrayed Seabiscuit in the acclaimed film. Rich In Dallas, who will retire to ReRun's Maryland facility, will make an appearance.
