Flesch makes British Open; eyes a spot in Ryder Cup
The Enquirer and wire reports
Colonial winner Steve Flesch of Union, Ky., Stewart Cink and Stephen Ames qualified for the British Open by being the top three players on the PGA Tour money list through last week's Colonial not already eligible for the year's third major in mid-July.
Flesch also moved into contention for a berth on the U.S. Ryder Cup team in September outside Detroit. "I've talked with guys who have played in that,'' Flesch said, "and they tell me it's like nothing else. That would be nice, real nice."
Flesch, three-time winner Tiger Woods and founder, host and course-designer Jack Nicklaus are playing in this week's Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
Horse racing
MET MILE: Neither Azeri nor Funny Cide put up much of a fight, with Brazilian-bred Pico Central, 5, taking charge in the stretch and beating Bowman's Band by three-quarters of a length in the rain at Belmont Park.
Azeri, the 2002 Horse of the Year, finished eighth in her first start against males. Funny Cide, last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, was a disappointing fifth in his first race at Belmont since finishing third in the Belmont Stakes.
CHURCHILL DOWNS: Silverfoot caught Rochester at the wire for a nose victory in the $112,400 Grade III Louisville Handicap for 3-year-olds. Silverfoot, ridden by Robby Albarado and making his debut in stakes competition, withstood a claim of foul to win for the fourth time in seven starts this season
HORSE KILLED: Standardbred Solo Bold, 5, raced through a track gate after dumping his driver and was killed when the horse was struck by a car on a nearby street at Hoosier Park.
Olympics
SHOOTING TRIALS: Xavier University grad Jason Parker failed to qualify for the Olympics in the three-position rifle event, placing 10th in the three-day competition that finished at Fort Benning, Ga. Parker already had secured an Olympic spot in air rifle, in which he qualified first.

The AFL set an attendance record with a total of 1,827,623. Average attendance for the 19-team league was 12,024, an increase of 6 percent. Total attendance was 25 percent higher than last season's 1,458,830.
